We were very pleased to learn that Rosanna's McGlone's fascinating book, The Making of a Poem, was recently reviewed by UK poet and reviewer, Nigel Kent. We are proud to be the publishers of Rosanna's book, in which she interviews eleven eminent Australian poets about their creative process.
Here is a sample of what Nigel Kent had to say about the book:
"Three of the insights that have led me to reflect on my own practice are: Jaya Savige’s statement that: ‘If I feel I’m getting too confessional, I try to rebalance things by banning myself from the first-person pronoun for the next few poems;’ Mark Tredinnick’s advice to his students that ‘the poem you’re writing isn’t about yourself; it’s about ourselves;’ and Bella Li encouragement to ’trust in your particularity: the subjects you’re interested in, the forms that you want to use…don’t try to change what you’re doing to suit some sense of an audience.’ I have no doubt the lessons other readers will take away from engaging with such poets will be different. That is the beauty of this book: there will be something for everyone!
"In conclusion, as I said earlier, when I read the predecessor, The Process of Poetry, I felt it was one of the best books I had read on demystifying the process of poetry writing.’ Well, The Making of a Poem, ranks alongside it. It is a fitting follow up to the former publication, and will prove an invaluable resource to help poets move their practice forward. An added benefit is that you may meet some new poets whose work you’d like to investigate further."
