On 29 October, we will celebrate the first collaboration of 5Islands Press with the much-loved Brisbane bookshop, Avid Reader, when we launch Maree Reedman’s book, Clear Air Turbulence.

Maree’s book is a treat for anyone who enjoys poetry that says what it means and says it well. Don't expect gnomic utterances or fancy technical acrobatics. Do expect to laugh, to cry and to be astonished. Maree Reedman's debut collection is truly poetry for everyone--her highly crafted poems do not make a display of her craft, but deploy it quietly and modestly in the service of the effective communication of things that matter.

Maree Reedman was born in Brisbane and has one husband, two cockatiels, and five ukuleles. She really only plays one of them, which happens to be the most expensive. She lives on Quandamooka country and is a psychologist. Her songs have won places in the Sunshine Coast and Melbourne Ukulele and Australian Songwriting competitions. In 2024, she won the Grieve Project In Memoriam: Antonia Buono Award for the poem “Bruce Dances with His Mother.” In 2025, she was shortlisted in the Calanthe Collective Prize for Unpublished Poetry. She admits to being a narrative addict. “Clear Air Turbulence” is her debut poetry collection.

Maree’s book will be launched by Dr Melanie Jansen, a paediatric intensive care specialist, ethicist and poet, whose debut collection All That Could Be Lost we had the privilege of publishing earlier this year.
