Portrait of Gareth Jenkins

Gareth Sion Jenkins

Gareth is a poet, installation artist and publisher. Gareth’s first poetry collection was published by
5 Islands Press in 2019. Recipes for the Disaster won the Anne Elder Award and was highly commended in the Mary Gilmore Prize. Gareth’s second book, The Inclination Compass, a multimedia poetic narrative, was published in 2023 with Puncher and Wattman.

His immersive art installations involve poetic sound compositions, electronics, video, UV-light, and sculptural assemblages.  With collaborator Kathryn Cowen, he was a finalist in the 2022 North Sydney Art Prize, a feature artist at Cementa24 and has recently created Serendipia, at Yarrila Arts and Museum - Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery.

In 2020 Gareth founded the archive and small press Apothecary Archive, where he specialises in designing, editing and publishing poetic books that often bring text and image into conversation.

Gareth’s doctorate focused on writers and artmakers who experience mental illness, particularly schizophrenia. Gareth selected and edited The Toy of the Spirit - the collected works of the prolific artmaker Anthony Mannix, published in 2019. This was done in close collaboration with Anthony.

Gareth teaches creative writing at Macquarie University and runs school-based writing workshops with Westwords.
